In the story of the Golden Calf, Moses is struck by God’s presence and struck dumb. In order to endure the experience, he has to find a way to still his mind. He does this by digging a hole and filling it with water, keeping himself busy with work that is not related to God. The thought is that the harder we try to escape from God, the more we will have to deal with him in silence.
